Hello, I'm Saehyun Kim.
I always believed following predetermined rules was something I had to do. The words in books, and what teachers and parents said, were all considered correct; acting differently felt like the end of the world.
A structured routine and predictable outcomes governed my life.
That changed when I visited the Leeum Museum and encountered the works of Maurizio Cattelan.
His provocative, humorous pieces—subverting authority and transforming everyday objects into social critique—made me ask, “Is this even allowed?”
They helped me see how narrow my perspective had been and released the anxiety I had long suppressed.
I realized imagination could exist freely beyond boundaries, and I began to desire creation through my own expression.
My work now stems from the disorientation of constant change—new schools, unfamiliar environments, and difficult decisions. I intentionally distort perspectives, manipulate scale, and combine incongruent elements. Mistakes, too, have become part of the process, teaching me that art is a journey of discovery rather than a destination. Likewise, I see architecture not merely as constructing functional buildings but as giving meaning to overlooked spaces.
At university, I hope to experiment with diverse materials and techniques, integrating architectural design with spatial and installation-based experiences. I aim to challenge conventional norms and craft immersive, thought-provoking spaces that evoke curiosity and reflection.
Inspired by Cattelan, I learned that boundary-breaking thinking belongs as much to architecture as to art—and I hope to grow into an architect who creates with intellectual freedom and imagination.
